Your home’s exterior is what creates the first impression, so it’s worth investing in some upgrades to make sure it is welcoming, inviting and looking it’s best. What better place to start than with your front door? Whether you’re replacing it or not your choice of colour will be critical in ensuring your home stands out from the crowd. Here are some key points to consider to help you choose the perfect colour for your front door.
Replace your Front Door
If your door is in poor condition you might want to consider replacing it. Not only will this help to dramatically improve your home’s appearance but it will also help with making your home more secure and warmer for the colder months ahead.

Most new doors will come in a wide range of colour choices. There will be standard and off-standard colours to choose from. Off-standard will be more expensive than the standard colour options. Most suppliers use RAL references for colour matching. You can also have dual colour options, meaning you can have one colour outside and a different (more neutral) colour inside.
Where to find inspiration
Once you’ve decided whether to replace or repaint your front door, the next question is how to pick a front door colour? If you simply don’t know where to start a good idea is to walk around your area and look at homes that are similar in style to yours or that have similar external finishes. This is a great way to get some front door colour ideas and a feel for what colours work well.
Complement the style of your home
Your choice of colour for your front door really depends on the style of your home and your own personal taste. If your taste is more traditional, my advice would be to go for the classic shades like black, red and green. If you’re looking for a more contemporary take on traditional colours dark greys, navy blue and very dark green are all timeless choices and will work with any style of front door, both contemporary and traditional. RAL 7021 is a gorgeous off black, RAL 7043 is a lovely Grey and RAL 5008 is a gorgeous Navy.
If on the other hand, you want to do something a little different, opt for a brighter and fresher shade. Rich sandy tones work well for front door colours, especially when paired with an off-white frame. RAL 7038 Agate Grey is a lovely contemporary shade. Pair it with RAL 9010 for frames.
Feeling Brave?
If you’re feeling brave you might like to have a little fun and go for something fun and vibrant for real impact. My brother painted his door in bright turquoise. He lives on a street of terraced red brick houses where all of the other doors are decorated in traditional hues. His choice is totally refreshing and really stands out, the only potential downside is that he now has people ringing the doorbell asking what colour it is!
